Happy Pear Day!

When I was a kid, I noticed that August was the only month of the year that had no holiday in it. So I decided that August 8 was Pear Day.

No idea what Pear Day was about, or what it had to do with pears. But... today is Pear Day.

Pear, Dual Ducks, Tricky Dick -- I appreciate the double entendres and the historical resonance to the Nixed One, but let's get really historical and panoramic.

August is the month when the swamp rabbit's menacing of President Carter became the major story, crystalizing people's accurate sense that Carter was a loser. (Note the continuing water themes in this history.) Ted Kennedy, who may have had many a dream of being attacked by river rats & a certain wraith, may have thought the curse lifted from himself and transferred to the weakened Carter. So Ted was lured by the swamp rabbit into running against the President in the Dem primaries, stirring renewed interest in Chappaquiddick. Kennedy lost and never ran for President again. The further weakened Carter then lost in a landslide to ex-lifeguard Reagan who assured and hastened the end of the Evil Empire.

Never have so many owed so much to one single rodentlike mammal, much less to a swamp rabbit. It deserves a statue and a holiday -- Swamp Rabbit Day!

Happy Pear Day to you as well!

We had a tradition growing up for August 1st. It was Crablegs Day. Hmmmmm..... I may have to look into resuscitating that holiday...
