That Yellow Line in the Middle of the Road

I heard yesterday about a teenager in a nearby town who started taking driver's ed, and was heard to remark to her parents, "I never knew before that the different kinds of yellow line in the middle of the road meant something. I thought they were just there for decoration."

Apparently the kid was serious.

Somehow this anecdote makes me feel better. It renders not quite so inexplicable those stories about college geography majors who can't find Great Britain on a map of Europe, and who think that India is located in South America.

I remember in highschool a debate between two girls right before class. One was insisting that the equator was a big rope tied around the world. She was arguing with another girl who thought the equator was painted on the planet. Valid points were that there's no way to paint under the ocean, countered by the idea that you can indeed paint the bottom of a pool. And, the water in the ocean would shrink the rope. Although that might be why the knot holding the rope on is so strong.

I also remember the teacher's face when he realized the sincerity of the conversation!
